My relationship with yarn has been long and satisfying. I was the kid that was always finger knitting or spool knitting with homemade spools. I have always had a yarn stash. When I was a teenager, I crocheted miles and miles of Afghans. These were the glory days of acrylic. I liked big projects and made Afghans for everyone I loved. My freshman year in college, I made the crocheted Afghan to end all Afghans. It was a sampler inspired by one in my mom's Better Homes and Gardens from 1977. I used up my lifetime's worth of scraps. I was going through a lot that year, and so I spent hours listening to Donovan, eating Ben and Jerry’s, processing my life, and working on this blanket. I shipped it to my childhood friend Vikki with out taking any pictures of it (she is working on some photos for me).
Feeling like I had done everything humanly possible with crochet I dabbled in some knitting. I made a swatch that celebrated color knitting. When I was done, it was beautiful but dripping with ends to weave in. Yuck! I decided knitting was no fun and moved on to sewing for awhile.
About 4 years ago, I was walking in my neighborhood and saw two pretty Afghans draped over wicker chairs on my neighbor’s front porch. I was inspired.
I purchased some Mission Falls 1824 Cotton in beautiful colors. This stuff was nothing like the acrylic of decade's past. I was in love. I went to work on an Afghan that never came to be, but rekindled my relationship with yarn. I have been knitting and crocheting like a mad woman lately. I used books and patterns to become an advanced knitter, but have only recently begun to use crochet patterns.
